If everything is either black or white then you have to assume that if you aren’t perfect, you are a failure. Learn to accept the grey zone. Embrace nuance.

I had a dream about someone I’ve been trying to forget. We haven’t spoken in a while. In the dream, I was at a party sitting on some steps. She walked in but she didn’t notice me, so I nudged her leg as she walked past me. She looked down. I didn’t know what to say, so I just nodded. She didn’t nod back. She mumbled “we’re just two random people” and...

2011
If you know me then you know that I’m not big on holidays. Christmas, St Valentines day, even birthdays aren’t really that big of a deal to me. For some reason, however, New Years escapes this rule for me.
Maybe it’s the epic reality of time’s continuous, unstoppable, irreversible flow setting in. Whatever it is, it makes me want to set goals. It’s the perfect...

Sometimes when we say we are asking for an opinion we are really only looking for re-affirmation. We get mad when it differs from our own opinion because taking a different point of view into account properly requires effort. Being stubborn is easy.
Magic Has Nothing To Do With Tricks
When I was younger I was very much into magic. When I first started, I would see a magic trick that baffled me and I’d quickly find somebody/somewhere that could teach me how to perform it. Then, just like many others starting in magic, I’d be disappointed by the simplicity of the trick. I’d think to myself: “this is so basic, it would never fool anyone” despite...

Fear of Failure - Destructive Problem or Powerful...
Following up on my recent post about “fear of failure”, I came across a study that really makes perfect sense when you think about it. It concludes that fear of failure makes those with low confidence regarding a task procrastinate said task. On the other hand, fear of failure actually motivates those with high confidence to perform the task and perform it better.
The other deciding...

It seems to be human nature to desire the things that are out of our reach - as if that impossible ‘thing’ you keep going for would be the answer to everything if you could just…
Would it really, though? Think about it. Really?
The other day, while talking to a friend, I realized that my biggest fear isn’t heights. It isn’t spiders. It’s not even death. What I’m most afraid of is never getting to where I am going. Then I remembered an old quote that went something like “Success is a journey, not a destination.” Perhaps I’ve nothing to fear.

This ‘expert’ on Nat Geo was just poking this giant squid in the mouth, and the squid was trying to bite him and he yelled in surprise, “WOW, IT’S LIKE THIS THING HAS A MIND OF IT’S OWN!!” What an asshole.
Oh, and it’s OKAY to close your eyes and get lost in the music now and then.
Stop trying to be so hip. You’re not the be all, end all of bad-ass. We all get hurt. We all have a hand in this mess. We all want to be liked by someone. We’re all connected. We all have someone that we miss way too fucking much. Stop hiding in that ugly shell of yours: some prick of a personality that you manufactured to protect your insecurities. You front like you’re the...

Love Your Music
For many artists trying to make it big these days, along with the goal of trying to get signed is often the goal of getting famous to get rich. While I agree that promoting yourself is crucial to stand out in a sea of noise, too many artists are stuck on this tip, neglecting the most important part of making music in the first place: the f*cking music.

Who knows what tomorrow will be like? Maybe it’ll rain bacon from cotton candy clouds and we’ll find stacks of hundred dollar bills in our underwear drawers. The odds may be pretty slim but that doesn’t keep us from keeping our hopes up. :)

Memory
Picture a massive clock, ten stories tall, with heavy, cast iron hands. Dangling from the hour hand is a man desperately trying to pull it backwards. The hour hand, however, carries on as though nothing were; the man’s efforts are fruitless. Regardless, the man will continue - in vain, perhaps - but he has to try. It’s all he’s got.

Stop dumbing things down
The concept of creating content for the lowest common denominator is outdated. You should inspire your audience to become more educated by seeking out the definition of words and concepts they do not understand.
Create intelligent content and you will have an intelligent audience. That is all.

Plantain snacks taste like nothing.
Today, I sat in front of the snack machine for 5 minutes carefully picking out what I wanted, considering product weight, taste and the fact I could only afford 1 snack. Finally I made what I thought was a solid decision. I punched the wrong number in and got plantain snacks instead.
